This network activity, Decoding DNA to Uncover Biodiversity at Parks Canada, is being hosted by LEARN in collaboration with Parks Canada. The intended audience for this session is Cycle 3 Elementary and Cycle 1 Secondary (Grades 6-8) students.

Dive into the unseen and become a true budding scientist! Through environmental DNA (eDNA), students will discover how we can detect species without ever seeing them—a fascinating way to understand how ecosystems function and why their protection matters. Using real-world examples from protected areas across Canada (belugas, insects, zebra mussels), explore, investigate, and sharpen your critical thinking around today’s environmental challenges. A stimulating opportunity to connect cutting-edge science with action for biodiversity!

What to Expect 

Join Parks Canada experts for an interactive virtual session projected directly in your classroom via MS Teams.

  • Teacher’s Role: Register, project the MS Teams link, and facilitate student responses.
  • Student’s Role: Watch the presentation and participate in live polls/quizzes.
  • Materials Required: A main projector/screen with audio. Student devices for AhaSlides are recommended but optional (teachers can submit answers on behalf of the whole class).
